Statins beneficial even after discontinuation !!

A long term follow-up study published in the recent issue of New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) has shown strong evidence that statins lower the risk of cardiovascular morbidity & mortality even long after stopping them. This study is a continuation of a previous pravastatin trial, the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study (WOSCOPS).

Though study design has some limitations, it clearly supports the fact that, lowering LDL Cholesterol levels even for a short time and controlling it has beneficial effects in long term.

Statins are wonder drugs for sure. In my opinion, the original researchers, Akira Endo and Masao Kuroda, deserve a Nobel. Their significant contribution has been shadowed in the glare of statin wars by Big Pharma.

Statins are also the best live example of how academic scientists and industry can work together in contributing to the community health care.
