Some Free softwares doctors should consider
Recent issue of Lancet has an article “Ten pieces of free software every doctor should have” (Needs subscription)
I found it very useful. I had most of them already and few were new ones. I am mentioning some of them below with some personal referrals.
1. Yahoo desktop search
Yahoo desktop search lets you quickly find all your emails, attachments and files. Quickly retrieve any file on your computer, regardless of where it is located. Search for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, text, HTML, ZIP and over 200 other file types.
I personally prefer Copernic desktop search because of its better user interface. You can also try Google desktop search, windows desktop etc
2. Foxit Reader
Similar to Adobe but supposedly downloads quickly. I guess Adobe will do with present day high speed internet.
3. Cute pdf writer
This is a must-download if you can not afford Adobe acrobat. Also has few additional features. Very useful.
4. PDF blender
Haven’t tried yet. Blends multiple pdf files into one. PDF Blender is a free cross platform PDF merging tool that utilizes Ghostscript.
5. Desk pins
DeskPins allows you to keep any window on top of others with a few clicks. If you are preparing a paper or chapter and want to have your references visible as you are writing, DeskPins can be used to have several windows topmost on your screen. Useful.
6. Screen-hunter free
ScreenHunter 5.0 Free is a completely free screen capture software for you to easily take screenshots. How can you capture text, tables, figures, or images from your computer screen for your PowerPoint presentation? Simple, use ScreenHunter Free
7. FastStone Image Viewer
This is an excellent program for browsing, converting, showing, and editing your image collection. You can even add annotations, arrows, etc. It has a nice array of features such as image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping, color adjustments, musical slideshow and much more.
8. SyncBack
Everyone should regularly back up their data, and SyncBack will do this via an easy-to-use interface. It can also synchronise data, which is useful if you wish to keep update data on your USB memory stick. SyncBack is a flexible, and quite powerful backup and synchronization program that allows to to maintain backup copies of your files and folder, or to synchronize them, so that both locations always have a complete copy.
9. X term medical dictionary
Easy-to-use application that includes a search engine with wildcard and incorrect spelling searches. The database of medical terms is updated weekly on the publisher's Web site, and the software features a function to easily download and add these updates.
10. Wordweb Dictionary
Not a medical dictionary, but a General one. My favourite for years.. So I am adding it in this list. I can say, it is an amazing stuff.
"Toss out that dog-eared dictionary and worn-out thesaurus, and use this amazingly helpful tool instead". (PC World)
I stop here at perfect ten.. Enjoy using them and keep visiting.. I will post some more in updates section. I have one post on free statistical softwares in draft for long...If you are too lazy to visit again an easier alternative is to subscribe in e-mail or RSS (use the form in the right sidebar).
Thank you for your time.
